
Few things kill a camping weekend faster than an RV that suddenly goes dark. One minute the air conditioner is humming and the interior lights are on; the next, half the coach is dead and the microwave clock is blank. If you camp, tow, or store a motorhome, travel trailer, or fifth wheel around White House, TN and the wider Robertson and Sumner County area, a little knowledge about how your rig is wired will keep a small hiccup from becoming a ruined trip. Below are the RV electrical problems we see most often on mobile calls, how to track each one down safely, and the point where it makes sense to have a technician roll out to your site instead of chasing wires in the dark.
Your RV Really Has Two Separate Electrical Systems
Before you troubleshoot anything, it helps to remember that your RV runs on two different kinds of power at the same time. The 120-volt AC side comes from shore power at the campground pedestal, from a generator, or from an inverter, and it feeds the big loads: the air conditioner, microwave, roof-mounted appliances, and the wall outlets. The 12-volt DC side comes from your house batteries and runs the interior lights, the water pump, the furnace fan, slide-out and leveling controls, and the control boards on your absorption refrigerator and water heater.
Sorting a problem onto one side or the other is the single fastest way to narrow it down. If your ceiling lights and water pump still work but the outlets and A/C are dead, you have lost 120-volt shore power. If the outlets and A/C run fine on shore power but the lights dim and the pump quits, your 12-volt house side or the converter that feeds it is the suspect. Say out loud which side is dead before you touch a thing — it saves a lot of guessing on a 30-amp or 50-amp coach.
No Power at All? Start at the Campground Pedestal
When the whole rig is dark, resist the urge to open the RV first. Nine times out of ten the trouble is upstream at the pedestal. Campground power posts take a beating, and a weak or miswired pedestal is common at older parks and at the seasonal sites RVers use around White House and out toward Bledsoe Creek State Park. Flip the pedestal breaker fully off and back on, and make sure your 30/50-amp plug or dogbone adapter is seated all the way in — a loose blade arcs, overheats, and can melt the connector.
If you run a surge protector or an EMS (electrical management system) — and every RVer should — read its display. A blinking fault code for open ground, low voltage, or reverse polarity means the EMS is doing its job and refusing to pass bad park power into your coach. That is not your RV failing; it is the pedestal. Try a different pedestal or a neighboring site, and if a park post repeatedly shows low voltage under load on a hot afternoon when every A/C in the loop is running, the fix is the campground transformer, not your rig.
The Converter: Why Your Batteries Won’t Charge on Shore Power
The converter (often a converter-charger built into your power center) is the box that turns 120-volt shore power into the 12-volt DC that runs your house side and tops off the batteries. When it fails, the symptom is sneaky: everything works fine the first evening on shore power, then over a day or two the lights get dim, the furnace fan slows, and the slide struggles — because the batteries are quietly draining and nothing is recharging them.
Check the converter’s own fuse (usually an inline or blade fuse near the power center), listen for its cooling fan, and put a meter on the house battery: around 13.2 to 13.6 volts means the converter is charging; a resting 12.2 volts or lower while plugged in means it is not. A converter that has cooked its output or lost its charging stage is a common failure on rigs that sit through humid Middle Tennessee summers, and it is a straightforward part swap for a mobile tech once it is confirmed. Tripped Breakers, Blown Fuses, and the GFCI Nobody Can Find
If only part of the coach is dead, you are usually looking at one tripped protection device. Work through them in order:
- Open the 120-volt breaker panel and look for a breaker sitting slightly off-center. Push it firmly to OFF, then back to ON.
- Find the GFCI outlet — it is often in the bathroom or on an exterior wall — and press RESET. On many RVs a single GFCI protects several other outlets and the outside receptacle, so one tripped GFCI can kill power to spots all over the rig.
- Pull and inspect the 12-volt blade fuses at the power center; a blown fuse shows a broken metal strip. Replace it with the same amp rating only.
- If a fuse or breaker blows again the moment you reset it, stop. That is a short, not a nuisance trip, and repeated resets can start a fire.
Rodent-chewed wiring is a real cause here. RVs stored between trips are prime nesting spots, and a mouse that gnaws through a 12-volt run or a ground wire will throw intermittent, maddening faults. If your fuses keep dying with no obvious load, have the harness inspected before you keep feeding it fuses.
House Batteries and Connections That Fade Over Time
Sometimes the wiring is fine and the batteries simply cannot hold a charge anymore. Corroded or loose terminals, a poor chassis ground, a failing battery disconnect switch, or a parasitic draw from a stereo or propane detector can all leave you with a coach that dies overnight. Clean the terminals, snug every connection, and confirm the disconnect switch is fully engaged. Flooded lead-acid batteries that have gone below 12 volts repeatedly, or that read wildly different voltages cell to cell, are usually sulfated and near the end of their life. The outlets run on 120-volt shore power while the lights and pump run on the 12-volt house side. If the 120-volt side works but the 12-volt side is dead, suspect the converter, its fuse, or the house battery connection rather than the shore cord.
Is it safe to keep resetting a breaker or replacing a fuse that blows right away?
No. A breaker or fuse that trips instantly is protecting you from a short circuit. Repeated resets can overheat wiring and start a fire. Have the circuit traced and the short repaired before restoring power.
