RV interior electrical troubleshooting in White House TN

When the 12-volt system goes dead, the whole rig feels broken — no interior lights, no water pump, no furnace fan, no slide-outs. The good news is that a total loss of 12-volt power usually traces back to a short list of causes, and most of them are straightforward to find once you know where to look.

Start at the Battery

Almost everything 12-volt runs off the house battery, so that's the first suspect. A battery that's old, discharged, or has a loose or corroded connection will take the whole system down. Check that the terminals are clean and tight, and that the battery disconnect switch (if your rig has one) is actually on.

Check the Converter and Fuses

When you're plugged into shore power, a device called the converter charges the battery and powers the 12-volt system. If the converter has failed, the battery slowly dies and eventually everything goes dark. Also check the 12-volt fuse panel — a blown main fuse or a tripped breaker near the battery can kill power to everything downstream.

Common Causes at a Glance

  • A dead or disconnected house battery
  • Corroded or loose battery terminals and grounds
  • A failed converter not charging the battery
  • A blown main fuse or tripped auto-reset breaker
  • A bad battery disconnect switch

When to Call

Electrical faults are easy to misdiagnose and throwing parts at them gets expensive fast. If you've checked the battery and connections and still have nothing, it's worth having the system properly tested — we measure charge output and current draw to find the actual fault instead of guessing. Bad RV wiring is also a fire risk, so it's worth getting right.

FAQ

Why does my battery keep dying even when I'm plugged in?

That's a classic sign of a failed converter — it's not charging the battery, so the battery slowly drains running the 12-volt system. We test the converter's output to confirm.

Everything 120-volt works but nothing 12-volt does — what gives?

Your shore power is fine, but the 12-volt side isn't. That points to the battery, its connections, the converter, or a main 12-volt fuse. We start there and work through it methodically.
