What Bearings Do and Why They Fail
Every trailer wheel rides on a set of bearings packed in grease. Over time that grease breaks down, water works its way in (especially on boat trailers), and the bearings wear. Heat is the enemy — a bearing running dry gets hot fast, and heat destroys it quickly.
How Often to Repack
A good rule of thumb is to repack or replace bearings about once a year or every 12,000 miles, and sooner for boat trailers that get dunked. If you tow a lot of miles, or your trailer has been sitting for a couple of seasons, it's worth having them checked before a big trip.
